This being Royal Ascot week it is only fitting that we are making fascinator hats in our studio.
So far we have used straw and sinamay as bases along with our leather bluebirds and are really happy with the results.
But this does limit us to a round shape,so I set Zak the task of making a new base in the shape of a art deco shell design.I wanted to get a real 1920's look to the design.
We found some wonderful inspiration from a Asprey Silver Powder Compact circa 1960's and also some 1950's broaches.
Zak modelled the design in clay and set about making his metal mold for the press.
Well I can confess after three failed attempts I really thought it was never going to happen. But after a Eureka! moment it finally worked out.
So Zak then went on to make another 1950's style classic fascinator base shape the teardrop.
Making our own bases makes it possible to create our fascinators from wool felt and other fabrics in lots of beautiful shades and enables us to match up the leathers with the bluebird and other motifs.
So here are some pictures of the shell design and the teardrop shape fascinators we have created so far.
